The British Experience
Settling in England Will finds a position with an electronics laboratory. Before leaving Australia he had been informed that his dossier would follow him, and, as predicted a British agent visited him at the laboratory. Confined to the four walls of the Lab however his usefulness was strictly curtailed, so, much to his relief there were no further visits.
After a fulfilling period with the Lab he takes up a position as Technical Director with a company that requires him to travel throughout the British Isles and on the Continent. His new environment now becomes useful for intelligence purposes and he is contacted. Involved with classified documents for the military and other government organizations makes him vunerable. He is accused of contravening the Official Secrets Act. This time he does not enjoy the luxury of the rapport he had with Australian agents and is kept virtually isolated.
Things eventually spiral out of control. In desperation Will makes contact with Australian Intelligence and they provide him with the means to extradite himself from a highly dangerous situation finally bringing his story to a dramatic conclusion. Getting the British episode behind him, together with his wife Dorothy, they emigrate to Niagara Falls, Canada to join their children.
The final quote in the book reads.
It was early Spring when the plane took off from London en route for Toronto. It would be a one-way trip for them this time. The angle of the lift as it left the ground had a special meaning for him on this occasion. It felt as though he was being catapulted out of the worst trouble he had ever encountered and he was feeling better about it by the second. They were starting a new life and this time he was determined to make it one of stability and contentment
