Norfolk Virginia
My Continuing Theme of Good People.
During World War 2 my ship had been sequestered by the US military for service in the Pacific, and we were awaiting orders at the Norfolk Naval Base to proceed through the Panama Canal.
It was early evening before I was released from my duties aboard, after being told that there was a seaman's mission house within walking distance from the ship.
I was wandering up and down the street in the semi darkness looking for the premises without success, when a lady approached me. "It's down a track behind those trees" she said pointing them out.
The track led me to a clearing and an old colonial house. some ladies were loading a van. " Is this the Mission House I asked" " Yes but we are clearing up for the day" " Never mind I'll come back tomorrow." "there's no need for that just go inside and we'll be with you"
I was the only person in the building, and they off loaded some of the items and cooked me a complete meal, chatted with me the whole time about my family back in England. I mentioned that my father was in Afghanistan with the artillery, and only my mother and younger brother at home. We laughed at the big meal that I had just devoured and the food rationing in the UK. They asked me what food my mother especially liked and not available to her. " We'll send her a food parcel they said"
It would be 3 months before I eventually got back to England. Yes, mother much to her delight had received 2 large boxes of all her special goodies.
Looking back at those times it could have been "sorry were closed" end of story, but it was the 1940's in the middle of World War 2 and people doing their best to look after other people in the middle of the turmoil.
Here are a some quotes from my article "The Good People"
Every day the news is dominated by all the bad people in this world, killing, maiming, and shouting of profanities right up to the higher levels of government.
So, where “have” all the good people gone? “Well” I am pleased to announce that they are still with us and in great numbers, striving to retain their sanity, but are being drowned out by the drum beats of the media, and other similar organizations
Just a suggestion from an old man in his nineties. Concentrate on the good people in this world. They will be there to help you, as you will for them. Without personal gain, just the good feeling of doing the right thing.
