The Angry Woman

Another short story from my time as a Television Service Engineer in Australia.

I was leaving the service department in the city to start my day when the dispatcher called out to me. " Will, would you mind doing a quick call a few minutes away from here in the city before you head out to your area"

I arrived at a typical small early suburban single fronted house nestled in a row of others of the same design.

Carrying my service case I approached and knocked on the front door. A lady opened it "Yes" she said in an inquiring tone. I replied "Television engineer" she reached behind the door. A broom appeared and she whacked me with it.

I was still holding my case and could not defend myself, so I quickly turned and headed back through the garden to the front gate, during which time she was repeatably hitting me on my back with the broom and with every whack calling out " you only come here to torment me" and she didn't stop until I was out on the sidewalk.

My vehicle had recently been equipped with a radio telephone so I called the base.

Sorry Will forgot to tell you that there are 2 streets in the same vicinity with the same name, number, and the occupants also have the same surnames and Christian names. There were no postal codes in those days.

Apparently on a recent occasion a truck had reversed up to her front fence and dumped a load of top soil into her garden hence the remark "you only come here to torment me"

I can still feel that broom hitting me on my back.
